We had a really nice visit with Norberto and Luzia Maciel over coffee this morning, and learned even more about everything Pico Island. Norberto and Luzia are the Uncle and Aunt of our Nephew-in-Law, Rob. They are a wonderful couple that enjoy teaching others about their beautiful island.
In the afternoon, we drove around to the north east end of the island to check out smaller communities in this area. We spent a bit of time walking around in Santo Amaro, and driving the coastline. This part of the island is very quiet, where nature and farming take centre stage. There are farm fields cut into the steep rise of the ridge that lies behind the village.
The skies were relatively clear today (no rain) and we had great views of Sao Jorge, a neighbouring island.
Tip of the Day: While driving the mountain roads, which are full of hairpin turns, you’ll notice that the speed limit is often 80 km/hour. It is not necessary to achieve this speed (Steve), because those hydrangea bushes along the edge are not going to prevent you from becoming airborne over the edge of the cliff if you misjudge the curve!
