With another gorgeous day on offer, we decided to explore the eastern end of the island. This is the area we have spent the least amount of time so far. The first part of our trip had us heading way up again. It’s a strange feeling to get up above the clouds while driving. We stopped to take some pictures along the way, and the absolute quiet (apart for some bird song) is stunning. The clarity today allowed for some great photos of Pico Mountain.
We followed our usual non-plan, and simply drove in and out of areas that seemed interesting, walked around, and chatted with the locals if they approached us. We ran into yet another guy who was born on Pico, moved to Canada as a child and then returned to the island as an adult. People have been so eager to share their stories with us, especially when they discover we are Canadian. After a lengthy conversation (he was supposed to be working on the home construction site nearby), he gave us his card and told us to contact him if we’re back in the area and need anything.
It was a great day of exploring. Shortly after we returned home, our host brought over some fresh bananas from their tree. We are feeling filled up with the kindness of the Pico people.
Tip of the Day: The tiny bananas that are grown here are sweet and delicious. If you are here, pick some up.
