Fun Drive Along the Coast to Sao Roque

We had a leisurely morning again, enjoying coffee and pastries from a local bakery that was recommended to us. Later we packed up and drove the coastal road around to Sao Roque and back again.

Today was mostly overcast, with more intervals of rain than sunshine, but we did manage to capture a few good pictures of our outing. Even when it’s raining, it only lasts a few minutes before the sun peeks out again. This results in many rainbows appearing throughout the day; so many, in fact, that we stopped photographing them!

We ended the afternoon with an invitation to meet the family that owns Vila Barca, our accommodation. Alberto and Maria Oliveira, and their daughter Dina, offered us a glass of the wine they produce from a small vineyard they keep in this area, paired with some sweetbread. Also present was a young Canadian woman, Sabrina, who lives on Pico now and works for the Oliveiras. Sabrina grew up in Ontario, with Portugese parents and grandparents, speaking both languages fluently. Dina also speaks both English and Portugese and they were able to facilitate a conversation between us and Alberto and Maria.

The Oliveira’s have several options available, including hotel-type rooms and apartments with more bedrooms, etc. Getting to know these gracious folks and chatting about Pico and how it’s changed over the years was a perfect way to end the afternoon. We love hearing the stories of the people we meet.

Tip of the Day:

As Ontarians, we often hesitate to head outdoors if it’s raining. Because of our research prior to travelling here, we knew we’d have to be prepared to head outside in all types of weather. Your tip is to gear up and get out!

Excellent tip of the day. It can make the experience so much better. You cannot let the weather you back. I was also glad to see that you got to meet Mr & Mrs Oliveira. You may not have seen this video – but Mr. Oliveira’s wine is his pride & joy that they love to share with guests. https://youtu.be/l4nf0kxCzj0
